Birchwood Behavioral Health/Alaska Baptist Family Services exists to bring hope, healing, and wholeness to Alaska’s youth and families. We provide trauma-focused residential and outpatient care for children and teens who have experienced severe emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges. Our purpose is to create a safe, Christ-centered environment where youth can heal from past hurts, build healthy coping skills, and discover their true worth. When students serve with us, they help meet practical needs on our campus through renovation projects, activities, and meaningful time spent with our youth. By volunteering, students gain hands-on experience in compassion ministry, develop leadership and teamwork skills, and see firsthand how their efforts bring hope to young lives. As a result, they grow in empathy, servant leadership, and a deeper understanding of how the love of Christ transforms brokenness into hope.
Students will partner with direct care staff to build trust and life skills with our youth. Activities include helping lead group outings, recreational and creative arts programs, assisting with daily routines, coordinating activities, supporting mission teams, basic maintenance, and creating or leading Bible studies for youth and staff. Success is measured by active participation, positive connections with youth, flexibility, and feedback from supervisors, all helping create a safe, caring place where kids feel valued and supported.
Special requirements: Students that serve on this project need to understand that many of those they will be serving among have come from very difficult situations. Your work will include both hands-on ministry opportunities and behind the scenes opportunities, facilitating ministry for others.
